Are Female Sailors Taking Over? Maiden Crew’s Shocking Victory

A delightful gathering was hosted at Clarence House by Queen Camilla, honouring the Maiden yachting crew. The crew were commended for their exceptional efforts and accomplishments, including a significant win at the 2023-24 Ocean Globe race.

Historic Win for Maiden Crew

The Maiden crew emerged victorious at the Ocean Globe Race, marking its 50th anniversary. Starting from the U.K., the race spanned over 27,000 nautical miles with stops in South Africa, New Zealand, and Uruguay. This win was made more impressive by the fact that the Maiden crew relied on traditional navigation methods rather than advanced high-tech tools.

The Maiden crew was not only the first all-female crew to win the race but also proudly includes the first Black female and the first Middle Eastern female crews to sail around the world. Holding a distinguished place in history, the crew was led by Tracy Edwards three decades ago, as the first all-female team to participate in the race, finishing a respectable second.

Support from the Royal Family

In September 2023, prior to their voyage, the crew received a heartfelt message of support from Queen Camilla. Her involvement with the crew didn’t end there. Alongside King Charles III, the queen had visited the refurbished boat in 2018 before it embarked on a world tour. This tour was undertaken to raise funds for education for the Maiden crew.

King Charles III’s Health & Future Plans

The recent gathering came in the wake of King Charles III’s recent recovery from a cancer diagnosis. The king has shown his resilience, turning his personal experience into a broader mission to help others. The royal couple has mapped out plans to meet with medical specialists and patients, to advance awareness for early diagnosis and cancer research. An official visit to a cancer treatment center is scheduled for the coming Tuesday.
